 Sushruta Samhita is the most authentic text on the practice of ayurvedic surgery believed to have been written around the sixth century B C. Sushruta, renowned as the father of surgery, represents the Dhanwantari School of surgeons. His sushruta

samhita discusses in minute detail how to perform prosthetic surgery to replace limbs, cosmetic surgery on different parts of the body, cesarean operations, setting of compound fractures, and even brain surgery.
The samhita discusses blood in terms of the fourth dosha, in addition to the tridosha. It is also the first to enumerate and discuss the pitta subtypes. Sushruta details about 125 surgical instruments used by him, mostly made of stones,wood and other such natural materials. Use of shalaka, meaning foreign body (rods or probe), is also mentioned by Sushruta. Some classifications found in the Sushruta Samhita are not even traced by modern medical science. He is the first surgeon in medical history who systematically and elaborately dealt with the anatomical structure of the eye.
Sushruta has discussed about 72 diseases of the eye. He has stipulated drug therapy for various types of conjunctivitis and glaucoma, along with surgical procedures for the removal of cataract, pterygium, diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
Plastic Surgery In India 2600 Years Old

Shushruta, known as the father of surgery, practised his skill as early as 600 BCE. He used cheek skin to perform plastic surgery to restore or reshape the nose, ears and lips with incredible results. Modern plastic surgery acknowledges his contributions by calling this method of rhinoplasty as the Indian method.125 Types Of Surgical Instruments

"The Hindus (Indians) were so advanced in surgery that their instruments could cut a hair longitudinally.
Shushruta worked with 125 kinds of surgical instruments, which included scalpels, lancets, needles, catheters, rectal speculums, mostly conceived from jaws of animals and birds to obtain the necessary grips. He also defined various methods of stitching: the use of horse’s hair, fine thread, fibres of bark, goat’s guts and ant’s heads.
300 Different Operations

Shushruta describes the details of more than 300 operations and 42 surgical processes. In his compendium Shushruta Samhita he minutely classifies surgery into 8 types:

Aharyam = extracting solid bodies
Bhedyam = excision
Chhedyam = incision
Aeshyam = probing
Lekhyam = scarification
Vedhyam = puncturing
Visraavyam = evacuating fluids
Sivyam = suturing

The ancient Indians were also the first to perform amputation, caesarean surgery and cranial surgery. For rhinoplasty, Shushruta first measured the damaged nose, skilfully sliced off skin from the cheek and sutured the nose. He then placed medicated cotton pads to heal the operation.

ayurvedic seminars

Before discussing Indigestion, understanding the process of digestion is very essential. The Ayurveda approach of explaining digestion is very simple and effective. The food we eat is digested by Agni or body fire which is present in our body. It is very much similar to the way we cook the food. The Agni or body fire helps to digest the food which is consumed, much like the fire of a stove cooks the food kept on it. The Agni is mainly situated in Jatara or in upper part of digestive system and is called as Jataragni. The Agni is further categorized as Bhootagni (which digests the 5 pancha mahabhoota factors present in food), Dhatwagni (The agni present in tissues which help them to absorb required nutrients), Malagni ( the agni which helps in formation of body wastes like stools, sweat and urine) . The Jataragni controls bhootagni, dhatwagni and malagni. Through this it is evident that ayurveda approach of digestion explains cellular metabolism too.

The factors which help agni to digest the food completely. : Thridoshas -Vata , Pitta and Kapha help agni to digest the food. This can be understood through the above figure.

If the process of digestion is compared to that of cooking rice, the stomach, like the vessel., receives food. Vata provides the necessary conditions like the air blower, Pitta acts like the stove, providing optimum working conditions while Kapha provides the moisture needed much like the water in the vessel.
When all these factors are normal and well balanced, an optimum condition is created to digest the food completely.
agni, indigestion

When food is completely digested by all the agnis, the body tissues will be well nourished and one is blessed with attractive complexion, glow, longevity, strength, good health, growth, enthusiasm, vitality and overall healthy development of body and mind.

The indigestion occurs when agni is imbalanced by the factors ( tridoshas ) which help agni to digest food. The variations of agni due to tridoshas are of 4 types.
Samagni ( balanced agni ) :The agni which is well balanced due to balanced tridoshas indicate the condition called Samagni . Samagni digests the food completely and nourishes the body tissues very well.

Vishamaagni ( varying agni ):- When vata is predominant this condition surfaces. The regular food gets digested normally on some occasions and poorly on others. Vata increasing foods and lifestyles lead to this condition. This variation of agni causes constipation, flatulence, pain in abdomen and other vata predominant diseases. The indigestion caused by this type of agni is called Vistabdhajeerna

Teekshnagni ( increased agni ) : This variation of agni occurs due to predominance of pitta. Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. This variation of agni causes increased hunger, thirst, acidity, heart burn and loose motions. The indigestion thus caused is called as Vidagdajeerna.

Mandagni ( decreased agni ): As increased moistness reduces the intensity of fire, the increased kapha reduces the intensity of agni. Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. Feeling Heaviness of body, swelling of eyelids (lower), belching which emit the smell of food consumed and water brash are few symptoms which of indigestion caused by mandagni. The indigestion caused by mandagni is called as amajeerna.

The decreased agni improperly digests the food and this indigested food is sticky in nature and improperly nourishes tissues, causing weakness of body. This sticky improperly digested food is called ama. Ama due to its sticky nature blocks the channels of body, vitiate doshas , contaminates tissues, imbalance body functions and cause diseases.

Causes of imbalance of agni which lead to indigestion

    Spicy foods, chilly, oily foods, medicines, milk and milk products, tobacco and alcohol.
    Irregular food habits and sleeping patterns.
    Medications like pain killers, antibiotics, oral contraceptives and steroids.
    Intestinal parasites.
    Diseases of pancreas, liver, gall bladder, intestinal infections etc.
    During pregnancy, premenstrual period, menopausal period in women.
    Emotional upset like anxiety, stress, examination, family tensions, etc.

Home Remedies for Indigestion
    Fasting completely for one day helps to normalize imbalanced agni and digest ama.

    Consuming liquid foods, boiled vegetables or fruit juices for 2- 3 days also improves agni and relieves indigestion

    Avoid the factors (mentioned above) which cause indigestion.

    Mix a ½ tea spoon of lemon juice, ½ tea spoon ginger juice and little salt in a cup of water and consume thrice daily.

    Drinking ½ glass of warm water once in 2 hours increases agni and digests ama.

    Cook ½ cup of rice with 4 cups of water with crushed ginger (1”) and salt. Powder long pepper (2 or 3)and fry it in a spoon of cow’s ghee and add it to gruel. Consume this when it hot. This is very light to digest and relieves colic pain.

    Abdominal Massage also helps to relieve indigestion. It loosens the tight muscles and increases the blood supply to digestive system. American Journal of aphysical medicine and rehabilitation mentions that “Abdominal massage has positive effects on some clinical aspects of neurogenic bowel dysfunction in patients with spinal cord injury. “

    Consuming well balanced food balances doshas and agni and hence keeps the body healthy and free from diseases.

As the seasons transition, (especially from winter into spring) Alternative therapists recommend cleansing the body to eliminate accumulated toxin. This annual or biannual herbal cleansing is designed to remove the toxic byproducts formed by inadequate digestion that clog the body’s systems and damages its tissues.

Out of eight branches of Ayurveda, Rasayana is one the most important. As age advances, there is slowing of growth in the body and circulation is hindered hence the substance called Rasayana is given. “RASA” means FOOD JUICE and “AYANA” means MOVEMENT or CIRCULATION. Movement of the RASA throughout the body, day and night, and consequent nourishment, maintenances of the cells, growth of new cells, expulsion of the damaged cells and full nourishment of the body is the main purpose of the RASAYAN treatment.
In the chapter of Charaka Samhita on treatment called “Chikista Stana” is explains: “There are two types of treatments, one is promotion of vigor in the healthy and the other is destructive of disease in the ailing.” RASAYANA is that substance which gives health to the healthy; it increases the oja, the complexion, the glow and the essence of the seven body nutrients (food juice, blood, flesh, fat, bone, bone marrow, and the vital essence). Charaka says “ long life, heightened memory and intelligence, freedom from disease, youth, excellence of luster, complexion and voice, optimum strength of body and senses, utterances that always get fulfilled, the reverence of people, body glow – all these does a person obtain by the use of RASAYANAS or vitalizes.” They are considered vitalizes because they replenish the vital fluids of the body. The aim of a RASAYANA is not merely to increase longevity, but also simultaneously to increase one’s energy and stamina so that they will be able to enjoy the long life they have.
Of all the RASAYANAS the most well known revitalizes is CHYAVANAPRASH.

“This is that very Chyavan Prasawaleh, the highest RASAYANA. It is specially recommended for the cure of cough, dyspnea, as a body builder for the emaciated, for those suffering from pectoral lesions, for the old and for children. It also subdues such disorders as loss of voice, diseases of the chest and heart, thirst and disorders of rheumatic type. It should be used in such doses as will not interfere with the normal meals. Intelligence, memory, luster, immunity from disease, longevity, increased sense power, amative delights, heightened activity of the gastric fire, clearness of complexion, the regularity of peristalsis ~~ all these man obtains from the use of this RASAYANA. By retiring into a retreat and resorting to this medicine, a man will shed his infirmities and emerge with FRESH YOUTH.” -- Charak Samhita

Shirodhara: The Signature Treatment of Ayurveda

One of the most common ailments seen now-a-days is stress. And as a result of stress people suffer from a wide range of conditions e.g. stress related hypertension, stress related digestive problems, stress related skin ailments, stress related insomnia etc.

If one was to handle stress well, then one would also prevent the above mentioned conditions and many more. There are many aids, treatments, foods, exercises, and massages etc that help us to beat stress.

But what about a treatment where therapists can actually put their clients to sleep without touching them? Can there be a short treatment of perhaps 30-45 minutes that would help to show results of 8-10 hours of deep sleep. And at the end of the treatment the client feels not only relaxed but rejuvenated with a clear mind to be able to focus well.

This is very much possible. The answer to all these questions is an Ayurvedic therapy called Shirodhara. Shirodhara is the signature treatment of Ayurveda which is not found in any other system of medicine.

• Shiro mean Head
• Dhara means to flow

Hence when put together it means something that flows over the head or forehead. Hence it can also be called the "Ayurvedic forehead oil flow treatment".

Warm herb-infused Ayurvedic oil is gently and steadily poured over the forehead across the third eye in a continuous stream using a special rhythmic swaying movement.

Ayurveda says "Don't put anything on your skin that you cannot put on your tongue because just the way everything that you put on your tongue gets absorbed and reaches different parts of your body so will everything that you put on your skin get absorbed to the deepest tissues like bones"

Importance of head and face in Ayurveda:

• The head, neck and face region are of immense importance in Ayurveda as this is the first point of entry for Prana or life force into our body. Oxygen is the food for Prana. And we inhale this through the nose.

• This is also the first point of entry for air, food and water via the nose and mouth.

• Ayurveda believes that as long as all the five sense organs are healthy and happy one can live a very long life.

• We are in contact with the external world via these five sense organs and all of them are situated on the head and face region e.g eyes, nose, tongue, ears and skin.

• There are seven Chakras in the body: Muladhara, Swadhishtana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara. Among these Chakras, Yoga and Ayurveda do give a lot of importance to Ajna and Sahasrara Chakras as they control the other Chakras and from a more scientific perspective they are related to important organs like the pituitary, hypothalamus and the brain.

Marma Points in Auyrveda

• Ayurveda speaks of energy centres in the body called Marma points. Marma points are connected with each other by energy channels called Nadis.

• Under normal circumstances, energy should flow uninterrupted through the Nadis while passing through the Marma points.

• Due to external influences like stress, tension, lack of rest etc energy tends to get blocked in Marma points. This results in symptoms of stress and strain.

• Blockage of these points will also result in early aging and many other ailments. Treating these Marma points will also help to prevent diseases or if there is any, it will help to treat or cure them.

When a Shirodhara treatment is given, it affects all the points mentioned above.

• It regulates the hormonal system by working on the Chakras.

• It helps to soothe the nervous system.

• It helps to strengthen the immunes system by inducing a state of deep meditation and relaxation and hence encourages endorphin production in the body.

• It helps to pacify the three Doshas by working on the Marma points.

• And lastly the continuous pouring of oil gives a sense of deep relaxation.

In addition to relieving disorders, it also has an added effect of awakening the third eye, invigorating the physical system and the mind and stimulating the cognitive memory.

Shirodhara helps to strengthen the following qualities in a client:

• Determination and self-restraint
• Thinking
• Reasoning
• Meditation
• Analysis
• Clarity of mind
• Focus
• Memory

It is a well known fact that whatever affects the nervous system (or immune and endocrine system) influences the other two systems profoundly. In the scientific field, it has been proved how deep these influences are. Shirodhara is one those excellent therapies that helps to soothe, relax, refresh the nervous system completely. By the time the treatment is finished, this also profoundly affects the endocrine and the immune system.

Shirodhara is a treatment that can be given all year round. It is suitable for all body types. Very traditionally this treatment is given during the day particularly in the morning between the hours of 7am and 11am. But the basic principle is that after the treatment the client should not return home to sleep for a few hours. It is important that the client stays awake for at least a few hours after the treatment.

The duration of the treatment may vary according to a person's Dosha type or the imbalance involved.
• Vata personalities or Vata disorders: approximately 60 minutes
• Pitta personalities or Pitta disorders: approximately 45 minutes
• Kapha personalities or Kapha disorders: approximately 35 minutes

Indications for this treatment are quite varied. Shirodhara is widely used as treatment to induce a state of deep relaxation. It helps to alleviate stress, improves perception of the senses, and alleviates anxiety, anger, and nervousness.

Ayurvedically, the indication can be divided as Vata, Pita and Kapha diseases. Some of the indications are as follows:

• Vata: Insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, difficulty to gain weight, mental exhaustion, Facial Palsy, hemiplegia or paraplegia, paralysis, constipation.
• Pitta: burning sensation in the head and neck region, stress related conditions, hypertension, ulcerations or inflammations in upper part of the body, greying of hair, loss of hair excessive sweating.
• Kapha: excessive sleep, lethargy, mucus conditions in the body, weak digestion, low appetite, anorexia, even conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes.

The list of indications is quite long but these are just some of them. Shirodhara is actually one of the Rasayana or anti-aging therapies which helps to promote longevity and is therefore including in anti-aging treatments packages. Shirodhara also helps to enhance both internal and external beauty therefore it is included in many beauty packages that are offered at various spas.

To be able to give Shirodhara treatment, a therapist needs the following equipment and accessories.

• Shirodhara stand which is made of teak wood and hence quite light to handle and yet stable
• Shirodhara pot which is made of copper and induces its medicinal qualities to the oil during the treatment
• Shirodhara headrest on which the client places his head. This helps the oil to be collected in a container without causing any mess or oil being spilled everywhere. The Shirodhara headrest ensures that the treatment when given is clean.
• Massage table on which the client lies down.
• Ayurvedic oil to suit the person's constitution or the imbalance that needs to be corrected.
• Ayurvedic oil warmer is used to warm up the oil while the treatment is being given
• Two containers or pans to hold oil during the treatment
• Shirodhara headband that prevents the oil from going into the eyes.
• Other accessories used are Rose Water to cover the eyes during the treatment, a hot water bag for the feet to keep the client warm.

• The client lies down on the table. The treatment is started with a short Abhyanga to the whole body or just the face.
• The client then lies down with himself facing toward the ceiling. The eyes are cover with rose water eye pad and the Shirodhara headband is tied.
• Thereafter the warm oil is poured over the forehead through the Shirodhara pot which hangs from the Shirodhara stand. The oil is poured over the forehead in a thick yet gentle flow. The therapist ensures that the oil is being poured continuously without any breaks in the flow.
• The flow is directed across the forehead in an oscillating manner from one temple region to the other. This is very important to induce a complete beneficial effect from the treatment.
• The pouring of oil is continued for at least 20 minutes or based on the person's constitution or the imbalance in the body.

Most practitioners use warm sesame seed based Ayurvedic oil. But other liquids can also be used based on specific indications:

• Buttermilk Shirodhara is called Takra Dhara: this is usually used for cardiovascular indications e.g. high blood pressure, heart related problems etc.
• Clarifies butter (Ghee) with some oil: This is used for high Pitta related conditions eg excess heat in the body, ulcerations, inflammations etc
• The latest addition has also been the use of herbal decoctions which can be used for Kapha related conditions or conditions where oils may be contraindicated.
• Goat's milk or cow's milk mixed with herbal decoctions is used for certain gastro intestinal ailments.

Usually in India two therapists are needed to give this treatment, but when properly trained this treatment can be given by just one therapist or practitioner.

It is strongly recommended that you consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner if you suffer from any ailments. The treatment protocol may change based on a person's body constitution and disease.
