PLANT DESCRIPTION


A perennial spiny shrub grows up to 5 meters in height. Leaves are simple, alternate, fleshy, oval, or cordate, and pubescent. Flowers showy, big white to pinkish-white colored. Fruits round berries, containing embedded seeds.

   
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES


Plant pacifies vitiated pitta, kapha,  inflammation, diabetes, infection, hepatic and splenic diseases, urinary retention, urinary tract infections and scurvy. Flower buds and fruits are edible, consumes as pickle.

CHEMICAL CONTENTS


Plant gave glucosinolates—glucoiberin, glucocapparin, sinigrin, glucocleomin and glucocapangatin. Rutin has also been reported from plant. The root bark, cortex and leaves gave stachydrine. Stachydrine, when given to dogs, rabbits and rats, quickened the coagulation of blood and reduced loss of blood.

PLANT DESCRIPTION

Flowers red, in many flowered corymbs on old branches or short lateral shoots. Fruits fleshy pink berries; seeds numerous embedded in the pulp.

The fruits pacifies vitiated pitta, cardiac disorders, urinary infection, general debility.

CHEMICAL CONTENTS


The root bark contains spermidine alkaloids, used for inflammations, asthma and gout.
Activity of the seed volatiles against vibro cholerae has been recorded. Aqueous extract of the plant exhibits anthelmintic activity; seeds contain antibacterial principles—glucocapparin; isothiocynate aglycone of glucocapparin. The blanched fruits, when fed to rats at 10% dietary fibre level, showed a significant hypocholesterolaemic effect, which is attributed to its hemicellose content. Pickled fruits are use for destroying intestinal worms.

A large thorny shrub grows up to 6 meters in height. Leaves bipinnate, large, pinnate 7 pairs, leaflets 3-8 pairs; flowers yellow, found in long pedunculated axillary racemes; fruits pods, covered with prickles all around; seeds oblong, hard and grey.


MEDICINAL PROPERTIES


Plant pacifies vitiated tridosha, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, fever, cough, worms, flatulence, dyspepsia, jaundice, arthritis, splenomegaly and diabetes.
